5. Immigration and Refugees

A major issue today is the migration of peoples. Many forced migrants are the result of wars, civil conflicts, and environmental degradation. These forced migrants, refugees and displaced persons, number almost 50 million today. One of the effects of globalization is the voluntary movement of individuals in seek of employment. Nation states have become xenophobic and are strengthening their laws to keep out refugees and immigrants and especially illegal aliens. To understand the legal, social, economic, cultural and political aspects of immigrants and refugees, a prospective student would select from among these courses:
Environmental Degradation
Migrants and Refugees
Theories of Development
Anthropology of Gender
Sustainable Development
Human Rights Law
International Humanitarian Law
Globalization
War, Peace, and Revolution
Issues in International Social Development
Economics of Development
